CELEBRATION OF BELLS 2018

CELEBRATION OF BELLS

Close to 450 children from the Municipality of Ferreira do Alentejo parade artisan bells fabricated in Alcáçovas, linking the art of metal foundry, transhumance rituals and the manifestations of contemporary imaterial heritage, as in the case of Folkloric Group Os Chocalheiros de Vila Verde de Ficalho, responsible many times for the opening of festivals and cultural events. Just so, we iniciate the festivities with the children protagonists in the opening of Festival Giacometti.

VOYAGE IN TIME

Painting exhibition by Ana Parreira

In the 70s and 80s in Cascais, Ana Parreira formed part of the same artistic and intellectual gathering to which Michel Giacometti belonged. Both share an extraordinary intimacy with Alentejo, Michel through musicology and Ana through visual expression, namely painting, design, sculpture and performance. “I remember Michel would say to me that i should be obligated to work full time in painting, without being involved in other activities. That’s not what happened, looking back over time, i can confirm though that i never stopped, painting has always been for me a necessity”.

Special participation of the Ethnographic Choir Group Alma Alentejana.

THE CASE OF THE WOVEN MAT BASKETS OF ODIVELAS

Identidade e Património Cultural Imaterial

A pre-industrial artisanal activity, the production of woven mat baskets in the Odivelas district, municipality of Ferreira do Alentejo, involves endogenous vegetal species, characteristic along the Odivelas riverside margins, reed and wicker in particular. It is an emblematic activity that gives identity in this district that involves different know how related with the preparation of the reeds, from loom assembly to fibre interlacing, sewing of the mats and joining on of the wings. The ornamental patterns assume the form of roses, checks, simple stripes, diamonds, crosses and lines that reveal themselves in green, yellow, red and pink.

This art form has been transmitted from generation to generation, persisting until today in Odivelas where it is still practiced by Herminia Gonçalves and José Nunes, at what is hoped not to be the last basket workshop!

Pauliteiros de Cércio, Miranda do Douro

The dance of the Pauliteiros could well have originated from the warriors of the Celtic era. The dances “Lhaços”, considered choreographically unique worldwide, portray the nature of different agricultural subjects, with an emphasis on social issues, warriors, love and religion, amongst others. The first official documents regarding the Folkloric group the Pauliteiros de Cércio refer to its displacement in London in 1933. The costume models worn by the group then are the same used today. Since then, despite having suffered from the immigration in the 1960s, they were invited to the best folkloric festivals in the world, maintaining the spirit of their ancestors and sharing the traditional dance in their blood.
